A Lee-Enfield Short Magazine MkIII* in .303 British, dated 1917 — produced during the most intense period of Great War production and almost certainly issued to British or Commonwealth forces before November 1918.
The MkIII* was introduced in January 1916 as a wartime simplification of the MkIII, with the magazine cut-off and long-range volley sights deleted to accelerate mass production. Chambered for the Mk VII high velocity .303 cartridge, it fed from a ten-round detachable box magazine and was capable, in trained hands, of fifteen aimed rounds per minute — a rate of fire that led German troops at Mons to mistake it for machine-gun fire. By the end of the war, close to four million MkIII and MkIII* rifles had been issued across the British and Commonwealth armies.
This example is a genuine sleeper. The bore is frosty, but still has plenty of life left — exceptional for a rifle now well over a century old. Metalwork and original woodwork appear consistent with a rifle that has survived intact; the one departure from original specification is a replaced stock comb. All other furniture presents as original.
A 1917-dated MkIII* with a bore in this condition is an increasingly rare thing. The "ShtLE III*" butt socket stamp and 1917 date place it squarely in the crucible of the Western Front production drive, and it deserves a home in a serious collection.#
