Product Description

This Steyr 1896 Mannlicher cavalry carbine is one of approximately 4,200 manufactured by Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (ŒWG) for the Portuguese military contract. The Portuguese obtained around 8,000 total Mannlicher rifles and carbines between 1896 and 1899, with the majority being carbines for mounted troops. These rifles bear "STEYR 1896" markings on the receiver, indicating manufacture in 1896 by the Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company.

Originally chambered in 6.5x53R (the original rimmed cartridge designed by Steyr-Mannlicher for Romanian and Dutch military use), this cartridge served as standard military ammunition from 1893 to 1938 for Romania and 1895 to 1945 for the Netherlands. The 6.5x53R is now obsolete, with surviving surplus ammunition being corrosive and expensive—contemporary prices reach $7 per round.

The barrel has been lined to .22 LR, a conversion that aligns with historical Portuguese military practice. Portugal began converting obsolete military rifles to .22 trainers in 1946, designated as the M946 trainer. After extended trials, the M1896 was found lacking for modern military use, and surviving weapons were issued to colonial police forces where they remained in service into the 1960s.

This conversion represents practical preservation of a historically significant but militarily obsolete rifle, transforming it into a functional .22 LR carbine while maintaining its connection to late 19th-century Portuguese military history. Barrel, action and bolt are all matching.

The gun I bought is simply fantastic. It looks brand new even is second hand. It's very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I highly recommend the store; the owner and sales experts are very reliable.
It's a pity you're so far away from me as I'd love to visit you more often.
P.S. Sorry for the late feedback, however hope it helps other customers! All the best!
