Starr Arms Co. Model 1863 Single Action Army Revolver, .44 calibre percussion — a genuine American Civil War military sidearm, and a notably early production example.
Serial number 23363 places this revolver at the very opening of Model 1863 production. The single action series commenced at approximately serial number 23,000, meaning this example was among the first of the pattern to leave the Starr factory. On 22nd September 1863, Starr entered into a contract with the U.S. Army Ordnance Department for 25,000 of the improved single action pistols at $12 each; serial number 23363 almost certainly represents one of the very earliest deliveries under that agreement.
The Model 1863 was itself a deliberate simplification of the earlier double action Model 1858 — designed to be more robust, faster to produce, and less costly for the Union government. The single action lock required the hammer to be manually cocked before each shot, trading speed for a cleaner, more consistent trigger. Barrel length was increased to 8 inches over the Model 1858's 6-inch tube. The six-shot cylinder is loaded with loose black powder and ball, ignited by percussion cap.
Starr revolvers, across both models, represented over 12 percent of all sidearms issued to Union cavalry, and were the third most-issued revolver pattern behind Colt and Remington.
Condition is good throughout for a piece of this age and history. The bore shows areas of light pitting but remains serviceable. A legitimate Civil War percussion revolver of considerable historical interest, with the added distinction of an exceptionally low serial number for the model.
