Ishapore Rifle 7.62mm 2A, a bolt-action military service rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and manufactured at the Rifle Factory Ishapore in 1965 — the year in which the 2A designation gave way to the 2A1, placing this rifle right at the transition point between the two variants.
The 2A is distinguished from the later 2A1 by its rear sight, which retains the original Lee-Enfield pattern graduated to 2000 metres rather than the revised 800-metre sight introduced on the 2A1. The receiver collar carries the standard RFI stamp alongside the model designation and manufacture year. The bolt, receiver, and action are constructed from strengthened nickel steel to accommodate the higher chamber pressures of the 7.62x51mm NATO round, and the extractor was redesigned to suit the rimless cartridge — distinguishing the 2A from any simple conversion of the earlier .303 SMLE. The distinctive squared-off magazine is proprietary to the 2A series. Bore reported good. Further condition detail on metalwork, protective black paint finish, and stock would assist in a full assessment.
The Rifle Factory Ishapore had supplied Lee-Enfield rifles to the British Indian Army through the Second World War and continued production of the SMLE Mk III under independent India. Development of the 7.62mm 2A was driven directly by the 1962 Sino-Indian War, which exposed the urgent need to re-equip reserve forces with a NATO-standard cartridge while retaining the well-understood SMLE action. The 2A and 2A1 together hold the distinction of being the last bolt-action rifles designed and issued for general military service by a modern armed force — a fact that underpins growing collector interest in Britain, Australia, and the United States.
The rifle exhibits a good bore and has been headspace gauged and is well within tolerance. The action and bolt both match.
