A Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine in 7.62x54R, distinguished by a 1937-dated receiver — an extremely uncommon configuration that marks this out as a collector-grade piece of Soviet military history.
The Tula star stamp on the action confirms manufacture at the Tula Arsenal, one of only two Soviet facilities — alongside Izhevsk — authorised to produce the M44. Tula's M44 output was confined entirely to 1944, and the production run was modest: approximately 50,000 carbines before manufacture transferred wholly to Izhevsk. That scarcity alone makes any Tula M44 worth seeking out.
The 1937 receiver date adds a further layer of significance. As documented by Mosin scholars and collector resources, Tula drew on older recycled receivers during its wartime M44 production — the factory had relocated in the face of the German advance and was rebuilding capacity as it returned to its original site. The use of a pre-war receiver, most likely from a battle-damaged M91/30, was a pragmatic Soviet wartime expedient. Carbines built on such early-dated receivers are considered rare and are actively sought by Mosin collectors.
The M44 was developed in late 1943, prompted by the close-quarters urban combat at Stalingrad and elsewhere on the Eastern Front. Patterned on the M38 carbine but with the addition of a permanently mounted side-folding cruciform bayonet, it was the first Soviet carbine issued to front-line troops rather than rear-echelon personnel only. Chambered for the 7.62x54R — a cartridge still in active military service — the M44 runs a 20.25-inch barrel and five-round internal magazine, fed via stripper clips. This example represents a genuine piece of documented wartime production history, not merely a standard surplus rifle.
