Ross Rifle Co. M1910 Mk III, .303 British — a scarce piece of Canadian and First World War military history, seldom encountered on the UK market.
Designed by Sir Charles Ross and manufactured at the Ross Rifle Company factory in Quebec, the M1910 represented the final and most refined iteration of the Ross design. The Mk III introduced a substantially redesigned action over its predecessors, replacing the earlier twin locking lugs with a six-lug interrupted-screw rotating bolt arrangement, along with a revised single-stack magazine with integral stripper clip guide and an improved aperture rear sight. With a 30.5-inch barrel — the longest of any Ross variant — the M1910 was built with accuracy as its primary virtue, and it delivered. Though the close chamber tolerances that made the rifle so precise ultimately proved its undoing in the mud of the Western Front, the Ross remained in the hands of Canadian Expeditionary Force snipers until the Armistice, prized precisely for the accuracy now available to the collector.
This example retains a good bore with clean, sharp four-groove right-hand twist rifling — the foundation of the Ross's formidable long-range performance. With approximately 420,000 Ross rifles produced between 1903 and 1918 and the majority remaining in North America, Canada, or scattered across Eastern Europe through wartime distribution, original Mk III examples in shootable bore condition are genuinely hard to source in the UK. A notable addition to any collection of Commonwealth or Great War military arms.
